No-one likes driving in the snow or in icy conditions, but we will all have to do it at some stage in our lives. So why not beat the bad weather blues and learn more about driving in snow with our helpful tips?

  • Unless absolutely necessary do not try to drive on ungritted roads. Once the roads are gritted it is safe to proceed.
  • Always keep your petrol tank full, this will prevent you running out of fuel if stuck in traffic thanks to snow or bad conditions.
  • If you do skid when driving don't use the brakes. Simply back off on the accelerator and if required steer into the skid to regain control. Be smooth and precise, don't jerk the controls.
  • When braking whilst driving on snow never lock the wheels, or depress the brake pedal fully. "Squeeze" the pedal gently to prevent skids.
  • Make sure your anti-freeze is topped up before setting out on a journey.
  • Keep an ice scraper and some de-icer handy. Don't even think about driving in the snow if the windscreen is fogged up.
  • Keep your stopping distances in mind when driving in snow, and always remember that it will take a far greater distance to stop in these weather conditions when driving.
  • Be wary of black ice; just because the road looks clear of snow does not mean there is no hidden ice on the surface for you to run into whilst driving.
  • If you get stuck in the snow stop driving (trying to drive out of the rut you have dug will dig you in deeper). Use something in front of your wheels (sand, salt, old carpet etc) to give them traction, or shovel snow away.
  • Ensure that your car has a full and complete breakdown kit just in case of an emergency when driving. Always keep a blanket in the boot in case rescuers cannot get to you.
  • Keep your car maintained, the weather can be tough on a car and the metaphorical cracks will really start to show if your maintenance is patchy.
  • If you absolutely must drive down ungritted roads fit snow chains, autosocks or spikes spiders to your wheels.
